The Rich, the Comfortable and the Broke Drummer

There are drummers who take playing drums as a hobby and there are others who are passionate about this hobby and wants to make this hobby their profession. All they want to do is play and make good money as a drummer. Easier said than done. And like every other profession there is the struggling artiste and bubbling artiste.

Not sure about other industry but in the drum industry there are three (3) kind of drummers: The Rich Drummer. The Comfortable Drummer. The Broke Drummer.


(1) The Rich Drummer: The guy with the Gigs. He has more Gigs than he can play. Always on tour. Plays for the biggest artiste in the music industry. He knows the right people (very influential) and never lacks opportunities. He is in no need for a side hustle (the drums covers the bills). Signed to three or more different drum brands. Nice cars and house. Beautiful wife and children. He is the rich drummer we all want to be. Not just rich in cash but rich in every other aspect as a drummer.

Every drummers dream. We all want to be the rich drummer.


(2) The Comfortable Drummer: He has the Gigs (not much, not less). Goes on tour once in a while. Plays for the local artiste in his home town. He is not that desperate for a side hustle. He knows the right people (not very influential) and often gets the opportunities. A car and saving to buy a house. Beautiful wife and children.

It’s a comfort zone. No drummer wants to be here for long.


(3) The Broke Drummer: No Gig. No tours. Play for the local artiste for free. No friends. Might be very skillful but No opportunities. He has lots of side hustle. No car or house. No wife and kids

Something definitely needs to change.

HOW DO YOU GET THE GIGS

I have read a lot of articles on getting Gigs and how "networking" should be the number one medium at which you get yourself the Gigs you want. Meeting new people, working with the big guys in the music industry, doing free stuff to get the attention and trust of this guys, playing free gigs and trying as much as possible to create different connections are some of the networking moves needed to get the Gigs. And as you all know there are two ways to market a product : (1) word of mouth (2) social media/online marketing. Same applies here in getting a Gig as a drummer. Networking like I listed above gets you the "word of mouth"(people connecting you and your brand with other people. People saying good stuff about you and how amazing you are on the drum kit etc) and when used by the right people (influencers) can get you the gigs you want. I HEARD THE DRUMS TALK

Today was a good day for me and I feel so good and proud about myself and I guess you all don't wanna know why but I'm still gonna say it.    * I practised for hours today (doesn't happen often)    * I learned new rudiments, rolls, fills, and dynamics and also applied them on the drum kit in a day (yeah I'm a genius)    * I got a call back from the last Gig I had (one of the biggest Gig ever)    * I'm gonna be on tour with one of the biggest artiste in Nigeria (I dreamed about it Lol, still waiting for it to become a reality. #Positive)    *And I finally showed gratitude to the universe for making me a drummer.
