Harmony in Rhythm: Embracing Selflessness as Church Drummers

Image
Growing up as a drummer in the teens church, I witnessed a common scene: the main drummer playing every set during a service. As the second drummer, I longed for a chance to play, but it seemed out of reach due to what I perceived as sheer selfishness. Years passed, and I found myself in the same position, repeating the cycle with my juniors. It wasn't until I joined a new ministry that I experienced a different philosophy—one where each drummer had their moment to play, reflecting the diverse talents within the congregation. As children, we may not grasp the impact of our actions, but as adults, it's disheartening to see selfish tendencies persist, especially within the church where unity should prevail. Philippians 2:3-5 calls us to a higher standard, one devoid of selfish ambition, where humility guides our interactions. Every church has its unique practices—some rotate drummers, while others rely on a single individual unless they're absent. Regardless of the method, th...

Beats Wisdom Mondays

Image
Welcome to 'Beats Wisdom Mondays!' Let the rhythms of life and the beat of drums intertwine in our weekly rhythmic exploration. Every Monday, we delve into inspiring words that groove like the beats of a drum, illustrating the beautiful dance between drumming and life. Let's find the cadence in our thoughts and the harmony in our rhythms. Get ready to jam to the wisdom of the drums: 1) He who jams heavily with no extra pair of sticks, should be ready for an heart break. Always have extra pairs. 2) An unexpected sweet roll should not be attempted the second time. Trust me, it will snare you. Drum wisely." 3) Don't rush. Don't drag. Find the perfect tempo." 4) Life, like a drumming masterpiece, is best played off the sheets, following the beats of your own rhythm." 5) Are your rolls on point (applying rudiments) or just a mixtape of creativity (as the spirit leads)?" #Beats-Wisdom-Mondays #Peace

Try different techniques and styles, and push yourself out of your comfort zone to learn new things. 2.      Listen and Learn from Others As a drummer : it's important to listen to and learn from other drummers. Mindfulness and Drumming Benefits

Image
Mindfulness and drumming are two powerful practices that, when combined, can have a significant impact on your focus, performance, and overall well-being. Mindfulness is a mental state achieved by focusing one's awareness on the present moment, while calmly acknowledging and accepting one's feelings, thoughts, and bodily sensations. It has been shown to reduce stress, improve attention, and increase emotional regulation. On the other hand, drumming is a physical activity that requires concentration and rhythm, making it an excellent way to exercise the brain and improve focus. The connection between mindfulness and drumming lies in the fact that they both require full attention and presence in the moment. When drumming, you need to focus on the rhythm and the sounds you are creating, while also staying mindful of your movements and physical sensations. This level of focus can help you stay present in the moment and overcome distractions, leading to improved performance and crea...

Building Endurance on the Drums: Tips and Exercises for Drummers

Image
As a drummer, having the endurance to play for long periods of time is essential, especially during live performances. Whether you're playing a three-hour gig or recording an album, the ability to maintain a consistent playing level is a key factor in your success. However, building endurance on the drums can be a challenging task. That's why it's important to have a solid practice routine that focuses on developing your stamina and strength.   Here are some tips and exercises to help you build endurance on the drums:   Warm-Up Properly: Start your practice sessions with a proper warm-up routine. This will help you avoid injury and prepare your muscles for the work ahead. Focus on exercises that target your arms, legs, and torso, as well as your hands and fingers.   Practice for Longer Periods of Time: Gradually increase the length of your practice sessions. Start with 30-minute sessions and work your way up to an hour or more. This will help you build the stamina you nee...

The Power of Repetition: Maximizing Your Drum Practice

Image
Repetition is a crucial aspect of drumming and practicing. It may seem mundane, but repeating exercises and patterns over and over is one of the most effective ways to improve your skills. Whether you're a beginner or a seasoned drummer, repetition can help you build muscle memory, increase precision, and ultimately enhance your overall playing.   The benefits of repetition in drumming are numerous. By repeating exercises and patterns, you train your muscles to respond instinctively to specific movements. This muscle memory enables you to play faster and more accurately, freeing up your mind to focus on other aspects of your playing, such as expression and dynamics. Repetition also helps you internalize rhythms and grooves, making it easier to play them effortlessly and consistently.   To maximize the benefits of repetition, it's important to practice with purpose. Set specific goals for each practice session, and choose exercises and patterns that will help you achiev...

The Unique Groove: Why No Two Drummers Can Play the Same

Image
Drumming is an art form that requires skill, precision, and creativity. It's a discipline that's been around for centuries, with countless musicians dedicating their lives to perfecting the craft. But one thing that sets drumming apart from other instruments is that no two drummers can play the same.   Each drummer brings their own unique style and approach to the instrument. Some may focus on technical proficiency, while others may prioritize feel and groove. Some may prefer a certain type of drum kit or setup, while others may prefer a more minimalist approach.   One of the biggest reasons for this diversity in drumming is the fact that the drums are such a versatile instrument. They can be played in countless different ways, and each drummer has their own preferences and techniques. For example, a jazz drummer may have a completely different approach to the drums than a metal drummer.   Another reason for the uniqueness of drumming is the fact that the drum...

Simplicity is Key: Why Drummers Should Keep It Basic

Image
When it comes to drumming, it can be tempting to want to show off your skills and play as many flashy fills and solos as possible. However, as the saying goes, "less is more." In this blog post, we'll explore the benefits of keeping it simple on the drums, and how it can actually make you a better and more versatile drummer in the long run. First, let's talk about what it means to keep it simple on the drums. It doesn't mean playing the same boring beat over and over again, or not using any dynamics or variation in your playing. Rather, it means being mindful of when and how you add complexity to your drumming, and knowing when to step back and let the music breathe. This can involve playing a basic, steady beat that propels the song forward, or simply leaving space for other instruments and singers to shine. One of the biggest benefits of keeping it simple on the drums is that it allows you to focus on the most important aspect of drumming: timing. When you...

Maximize Learning From Your Videos

Image
One of the things we love to do as drummers or musical instrumentalist in general is showing the world through our videos how talented we are. And doing so has created opportunities/Gigs for some of us.   But apart from just sharing our videos online, we can also learn from them.     Learning from my own drum video performance has been a valuable tool for improving my drumming skills and becoming a better musician.   Here are some tips for how you can make the most of this opportunity:   1.        Watch the video with a critical eye: As you watch your performance, try to be objective and identify any mistakes or areas for improvement. This could include timing issues, incorrect stick technique, incorrect footwork, or unnecessary rolls.   2.       Take notes: As you watch the video, make a list of the specific areas you want to work on. This will help you to focus your practice sessions and tra...

I Refuse To Compete

Image
Growing up we were told competition makes us stronger or competition brings out the best in us. In school we were encouraged to compete coz that was the only way we could be better. We focused more on ourselves than on others…… we did things, strived hard at our academics, careers and also in life just to get applauds from people. We get jealous when we see our peers doing better and then we swear to be better and greater than our peers by any means possible. What a miserable way to live. Lol.   We were never taught to be the best version of ourselves. And most importantly we were never told or taught that the things we learn from this world are not the standard on how best to live one’s life.   And so, what is the best standard? THE WORD OF GOD. Your shocked right?    Galatians 6:4 says: Let everyone be devoted to fulfill the work God has given them to do with excellence, and their joy will be in doing what’s right and being themselves, and not being affirm...

Every Industry Has Its Branches

Image
One of the things that scares us the most as a musician or an instrumentalist is our FUTURE. We ask ourselves questions like: What would the future be like for an instrumentalist? Am I still going to jam the drums in my 40’s and 50’s? Music is the only thing I know, if I am not playing what else can I do to earn a living as an instrumentalist? If you have not thought about questions like this, I have. And honestly it can be a vibe or even a dream killer. But like football, every industry has its branches. For example, if the dream was to become a professional footballer and you are not, due to injury and other life troubles, you can also be a football coach, writer, manager, anchor, referee or even a talent scout. All of this profession still revolves around football. You are still going to do the thing that you love but in a different way. Same goes for instrumentalist. There are other branches in this music or instrumentalist industry. You just got to settle and think about it. ...

Love and Support

Image
We can’t do it all alone. I can’t do it all alone. And that’s why most times we (instrumentalist) need that push, support and encouragement from our friends and families to keep doing the things that we love. We’ve been told to get a real job coz playing an instrument is not a profession, it is something you do for fun. We hear things like “is this what you want to do your whole life”, “can you build a house or buy a car from playing an instrument”, “no one makes a living from their talent”, “forget about this and pursue a real career” etc.……… I am pretty sure some of us have heard things we like this. And due to societal pressure, lack of support and encouragement from the people that we love and serve, some who are making little to nothing from playing the drums, have made the decision to learn a skill, get a job or start a business. But the fact that we doing this other thing (job, hustle, business) doesn’t mean we want to stop playing or doesn’t mean we are just going to give...

Supernatural Ability

Image
Talking of the supernatural, I do not know if other instrumentalist has this unique ability or maybe it’s just the drummers alone. The ability to point out other drummers without having any knowledge of who they are. This is something I find myself (and I know other drummers do too) doing most times. It just happens. I can’t explain it. A drummer could be in the church or a show and looking around he sees a guy sited somewhere minding his business, and instantly this supernatural ability kicks in and he knows for sure that the guy sited over there is a drummer. I don’t know how we do it but 80% of the time we are always right. Is it the looks? The charisma? Or just instinct? I do not know for sure. But. I think there is one hack you can use to access this ability whether you are a drummer or not. If you see a guy who is more invested in the drummer playing than the praise and worship going on. He is a drummer. I can bet my sticks. That guy is a drummer. Lol. I do not know o...

Data Analyst On Weekdays. Drummer On Weekends

Image
They say you’ve got to have multiple sources of income if you want to make it big or you want to survive in this our dear country Nigeria, coz one hustle equal to no hustle at all. They say if you’re not hustling, grinding and suffering then you are not ready for success. For me the goal has always been to play the drums and make money from playing alone. I have always believed in this quote “make your passion your profession and work will become play”. Beautiful quote by the way. Coz who says you can’t become a millionaire from playing the drums alone, who? I have seen others do it, so it is not impossible. But. I have come to realize that not everyone will have it that smooth. Not every drummer is gonna make so much money from playing the drums alone, in fact some won’t even make any at all. As sad as it sounds, that is the reality that we live in. So, what do we do? Or what did I do, coz I happen to be amongst the set of drummers that are making little to nothing from play...

Screen And Mind

Image
Screen and Mind. This is 2022. Twenty – Twenty – Two. My year of “ON YOUR SCREEN” and “ON YOUR MIND”. This means that you will be reading more of my drum post, watching me play and talk about drums (still thinking about it. I am shy small. Help me. Broke-ness too shall be tackled. Contents. Contents and more Contents. Good or bad, lazy or not. Contents. And not just me, you too should also be on people’s screen and mind this year. 10 RIDICULOUS THINGS I WANT TO INVENT IN THE DRUM WORLD

Image
They say ideas rules the world, so today I'm gonna be sharing with you 10 of my most crazy and ridiculous ideas. Please note this ideas ain't for execution. I might experiment with some of ideas in the nearest future but for now, I'm just writing them to exercise the idea muscle. Whether the ideas are good or bad. It doesn't matter.  This is not a general idea. I am a drummer,  so all of my ideas are drum related. If you ain't a drummer or a musical instrumentalist you might not vibe with the ideas. But if you do, nice one. Lol.  Without wasting much of your time, here are the ideas:  1) A tuner app for drums: an app you can use to tune the drums. I just realized a tech drum needs to be invented first before inventing an app that tunes drums. Smh. An app like that won't work on a normal drum kit. Anyways. We move. 2) A 3D invisible drum kit: drummers play a lot to invisible things. Making an 3D invisible kit with a sound ain't a bad idea.  3) A drum beat hin...

HOW TO BE AN AVERAGE DRUMMER

Image
Ladies and gentlemen. Boys and girls. To be an average drummer ain't that hard. People say it is. A lot of drummers don't wanna be average, I don't know why. But if you do, Just follow this steps. 1) Don't practise: please don't. Practicing is overated. But when ever you do decide to pick up the sticks, don't stress yourself, 30 minutes of practise once or twice a week is enough for you.  You might not get better at drumming, who cares! This is what comes with being an average player. 2) Watch for fun: there are lots of drum lessons on Youtube. Bro, ignore them all. Don't do what the good and amazing drummers do. These guys watch both drum lessons and drum covers from professionals. They just don't watch, they also practice and creatively apply them when they play. But you are an average drummer,  you don't need the lessons. Just focus on the drum covers or solos by the professionals and keep wishing you can play the drums the way they do. Cheers. ...

Life Messing Up My Gigs

Image
Life is so unpredictable. One day you are so hyped about a Gig and all of a sudden, the Gig is no more. Life has its own way of doing things. You know that popular quotes that says “Man plans but God laughs” yeah that one. That’s how life works. So, I will be sharing with you some of the amazing experience I have had with this “Life”. I won’t say life messed things up for me but I can say it really broke my heart.   Maybe this amazing thing called LIFE was looking out for me or it felt that the Gig I was so excited about wasn’t the right Gig for me. I don’t know. Now when there is a potential Gig to be played in a few days. I don’t get too excited, I don’t begin to imagine things, I don’t really hope for anything. I just go on doing the things I have been doing. Coz I know anything can happen in a day, an hour or seconds. Anything can happen. And when something happens, Good or Bad. All I can say is: IT IS WHAT IT IS. Like I said earlier I would be sharing with you som...
